"Kinder Morgan Inc., a company based in the USA, has committed to reach net-zero carbon emissions from its transmission and storage operations by 2050. Net Zero Tracker
This commitment was made as a member of the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America in 2021. Net Zero Tracker
However, this target is not explicitly mentioned in the company's 2021 ESG report. Net Zero Tracker
An interesting aspect of their environmental policy is their interim target for 2025, which is to achieve a methane emission intensity of 0.31% for their natural gas transmission and storage operations, compared to a baseline year of …"

Sector Benchmark

Note: Latest GHG and revenue data (based on tradingview.com) are used to calculate GHG emissions intensity by sector. The color scale of each bubble depends on the GHG intensity (GHG emissions per 1 million USD revenue). Sectors follow the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS) that organize companies based on their primary business activities. The 11 sectors are : Information Technology, Health Care, Financials, Consumer Discretionary, Communication Services, Industrials, Consumer Staples, Energy, Utilities, Real Estate, and Materials.

Kinder Morgan Inc. belongs to the sector Energy.

Offsets

Last update for Kinder Morgan by zerotracker.net: March 23, 2023
Planning to use external offset credits Yes
Separate targets for emission reductions and removals No
Conditions on use of offset credits
  • No conditions specified
Plans for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) Yes (nature-based and CCS-based removals)

Additional notes: In the 2021 ESG report, the company states that they "participate with other organizations to advance CCUS policy and technology". 2021 they participated in the Colorado Energy Office CCUS task Force which evaluated Colorado's opportunities for carbon capture etc... pg 27. Highlights how CCS-based removals not yet in action but strong likelihood they will be in the near future. NATURE BASED: We also support Arizona’s Climate Change Action Plan through our participation in an afforestation program called Trees for Tucson in Tucson, Arizona. Since 2017, we have contributed to planting approximately 2,258 trees in the Tucson metropolitan area. These trees sequester CO2, helping to offset CO2 in the atmosphere. CREDITS AND OFFSETS: Purchased credits in 2020 = 113 thousand metric tonnes of CO2 and in 2021 = 86 thousand metric tonnes CO2e. Natural pipeline business segment, which owns a 50% interest in and operates Ruby Pipeline L.L.C has been net zero since 2011 by using emission reduction credits or renewable energy credits to offset Scope 1 and 2 emissions from construction and ongoing operations. In 2021, Ruby purchased approximately 86 thousand credits. These credits are verified through a third party but no clear carbon credit conditions specified. https://www.kindermorgan.com/WWWKM/media/Safety-Environmental/documents/2021_ESG_Report.pdf
